Wednesday Catch-Up

Again, I can't believe how long it has been since I posted to the blog... Time passes faster and faster each year! I am so glad to be home for awhile after all the traveling I have done since Aug 1st!

Denver Wrap-Up: I had a good trip in Denver and by the end of the trip, Darryl and I decided that he will move in with me when he moves back here after his house sells. So...I guess that makes us officially "a couple." 8-) I think the only thing that is the same as we were 40 years ago is our names and our interest in photography.... We are totally different people from the couple that got married at 17 and divorced 15 years later. The differences include not only our looks but personality, what we like, thinking, tastes, etc.

Combining two houses: Darryl has lived in a 2100+ sq ft house by himself for many, many years so he has spread out and filled the house. I have lived in the apartment here for almost 3 years and the extra empty space I had after moving here has been totally filled up. So he is getting rid of his furniture and a lot of other things before moving back. I'm trying to make room for another person - space in the dresser, closet, office, garage, etc. I'm not much of a pack-rat until it comes to the office where I am surrounded by notebooks, gadgets, etc. It is going to be an interesting job for both of us.  I will admit that at this point, he is further ahead in his tasks than I am....

Cell tower covers: I kept seeing the little houses in the below picture when driving along a particular freeway in the Denver area. I found out that they are covers for cell towers!  I have seen the cell towers disguised as trees, palm trees and saguaro cactus but this it the first time I seen them built into structures. Very clever....

Family Pictures: Last week I went down to Arkansas for a few days with Vivian and Karen, 2 of my nieces, and we came back through Roaring River Park. While in Bentonville, Arkansas, we met up with Billy Goodson, a 1st cousin and his wife  - on my mother's side. As far as I know, he is the only living 1st cousin I have left. This was the 2nd time I have seen him since we were kids about 10-12 years old.  One of my regrets in life is that my family was not closer but I can't go back and change it now.....  I asked him if he would bring a picture of his parents to dinner since the only one I have of them is when they were in their 20's and both are dead now.  Billy has a box of his mother's with pictures so looked through it to get a picture for me and he hit the genealogy jackpot. In the box was many, many family pictures that his mother had. She had neatly written who the people were on the back of the pictures. Since they lived out of state, apparently my grandmother faithfully sent pictures to them over the years.  Also, his mother may have ended up with my grandmother's pictures when she died. Most of the photos need a lot of restoration work done on them but that will wait for a cold, winter day.... Here are some samples of his finds:

This is my maternal grandfather as a young man. The original photo is a tintype photograph. There is also a tintype photo of his father!

The little girl on the right is my mother with her parents and 4 of her siblings. This was before Billy's dad was born. Based on when the baby was born, the picture would have been taken in 1912 and my mother would have been around 7 years old.

Friend dies in Sacramento, CA: When Larry and I lived in Sacramento back in 2002 - 2005, we hung around with Sally and Dwight who were friends of Larry's when he lived there, before he moved to Utah with me in 2000. Dwight died back around 2007 and Larry died in 2011. Sally's daughter send me an email a couple of weeks ago letting me know that Sally had died. It seems strange that I am the only one left of the group but I have some good memories of our time together.

Back to cleaning out the garage....
