Here is the Duck Palace where the Peabody Ducks spend their time when not "on stage". Back in the 1930's, the General Manager of The Memphis Peabody Hotel and a friend returned from a weekend hunting trip to Arkansas. The men had a little too much Tennessee sippin' whiskey and thought it would be funny to place some of their live decoy ducks (it was legal then for hunters to use live decoys) in the beautiful Peabody fountain. The reaction of the guests who saw the ducks was enthusiastic. Thus began a Peabody tradition which has become internationally famous. Each of the Peabody Hotels has a fountain and their own ducks with a Duck Master. The ducks do their walk to the lobby fountain at 11 a.m. and go back to the Duck Palace at 5 p.m. The 5 ducks are changed out about every 3-4 months and this was the 1st week for the ducks we saw today. All Peabody Ducks are raised on a central farm and it takes 3-4 days to train them for the red carpet.
